Griaule Biometric Suite

Introduction

The Griaule Biometric Suite, or GBS, is Griaule's complete biometric solution.

GBS is an ABIS that has tools for multimodal biometric capture, quality assessment, exception handling, card scanning and criminal case management. It is technologically scalable to any database size, simply by adding enough nodes to the server cluster.

The Griaule Biometric Suite is fully capable of handling fingerprints, latent prints, palmprints, irises, faces and newborn palmprints.

gbs biometric modalities

GBS isolates by design what runs on the client side and what runs on the server side. Client applications only perform data collection and basic processing. On the server side, permanent storage and biometric comparisons are performed.

GBDS

GBDS, acronym for Griaule Biometric Database Server, is the main server-side component. It is the distributed biometric database system built on top of the Hadoop architecture. The other components act as clients of the GBDS.

GBDS implements a microservices architecture and includes services for authentication, notification, migration, subsystems for client applications and ABIS routines, such as template extraction and biometric comparison. GBDS also includes Hadoop components, the internal relational database and the API gateway.

The database is distributed across all cluster nodes with triple redundancy, avoiding access bottlenecks and minimizing the risk of data loss in case of hardware failures.

Client Applications

If BCC Services is not running, open the start menu by clicking the Windows icon on the left side of the taskbar (or by pressing the Windows key on the keyboard). Then look for the GBS BCC folder in the list of programs (or type "bcc" to search). Click the

BCC logo

The BCC, or Biometric Capture Component, is a biometric registration application. It was designed for registering civil profiles and newborns with biographical and biometric data, such as fingerprints, face, palmprints and iris.

BCC can be used to collect data and create standardized profiles for biometric registration. BCC performs a quality check on the data to ensure that only high-quality data is sent to the server. These data are stored in the GBDS and can be used in identification and verification operations. As part of the Griaule Biometric Suite, the registration process also checks new records for biometric issues (such as low quality, duplicates, non-matching with the sequence control) and possible fraud (duplicate biometrics across profiles of different people).

BCC Mobile

The BCC Mobile is a set of libraries for biometric registration with smartphones. It is used to capture faces and fingerprints. For faces, it offers integrated liveness detection to improve security and reliability.

CardScan

CardScan logo

The CardScan is an application to scan paper cards containing biometric data, such as fingerprints, palmprints, faces and signatures.

CardScan extracts the textual biographical data from the cards using optical character recognition (OCR), segments the biometrics and performs the registration operation in the GBS biometric database (GBDS). It is possible to fully customize the extraction fields, allowing operations with any decafinger card layout.

ETR

ETR logo

ETR, or Exception Treatment, is a tool for experts to handle exceptions generated by GBDS. Whenever a registration or update operation generates an exception, whether due to duplication or lack of biometric match, one or more experts need to analyze and handle these exceptions. ETR allows comparison of exception profiles with a clean and intuitive interface.

MIR

MIR logo

MIR, or Manual Image Review, is a tool to handle biometric registration transactions that require manual review due to quality issues.

This step is necessary when the quality of captured biometrics does not meet minimum requirements, when there are duplicated fingers or when a fingerprint does not match its pair in the sequence control.

When a record is rejected due to low biometric quality, an operator needs to manually review the data in MIR and choose to accept, edit or reject. A common scenario is receiving records with duplicated fingers, that is, the same finger in two different positions.

In registrations with sequence control and joint capture of multiple fingers, the reviewer can cut the correct fingerprint from the sequence control and place it in the individual field where the capture was made incorrectly.

With MIR, the operator can easily deal with image quality issues before resubmitting the profile for registration, improving the quality of the biometric database.

BEST

BEST logo

BEST, or Biometric Expert Software Tool, is a complete application for forensic investigation and case management. BEST offers tools for improving the quality of evidence images, automated biometric comparison and identification in a clean and intuitive interface.

BEST offers several filters for treating latent fingerprint images, tools for manual minutiae marking, allows biometric searches across various modalities and organizes the operator's work into structures common to forensic practice, such as grouping data into cases, fragments and suspect lists.

With BEST, the operator can create a case, add latent biometric images, process those images to improve their quality and perform searches in the biometric database in just a few minutes.

FastLine

FastLine logo

The FastLine is an application for authentication in queues. It uses facial identification to allow people to be authenticated faster than by document checking by human operators. FastLine was developed specifically for cases such as airport boarding, cinema lines, access control and attendance registration in schools. Using FastLine, people can simply pass through a given location while the system recognizes, identifies and records all individuals.

Intelligence

Intelligence logo

The Intelligence is an application that performs textual searches in the GBDS database, searching values in identifiers (PGUID, TGUID), keys, biographical fields and label fields.

SmartSense

SmartSense logo

The SmartSense is an application to monitor GBDS clusters, allowing the user to view live reports on the health and performance of the environment.

Control Panel

The Control Panel is an application developed to easily change GBDS settings. The Control Panel provides a graphical interface where the user can control parameter values and compare values between different configuration files.

Print

The GBS Print is a web application to manage and print identity documents. It receives documents to be printed and groups them into batches. The batches are then printed, scanned and inspected to ensure the documents were printed correctly. Then it verifies the documents and links them to the unique typographic code (barcode) present on the document sheet received from the printing house. Finally, the batches of verified documents are grouped into pouches and sent to the stations for distribution. GBS Print also allows the user to configure the printers used to print the documents and to generate reports on the processed documents.

SMART

The GBS SMART is a web application for collecting biographical and biometric data for issuing identity cards, employee ID cards or criminal identification.

Home Screen

The GBS Home Screen is a web application that provides an interface with shortcuts to access the entire Griaule Biometric Suite (GBS) using a single login. When authenticated, the user has access to all applications available to them without needing to log in to each application individually.
