MIR

Introduction

The GBS MIR (Manual Image Review) is a web application developed to help examiners handle biometric enrollment transactions that require manual review. This step is necessary when the quality of the captured biometrics does not meet minimum requirements, there are duplicate fingers, or any fingerprint capture does not match the sequence control capture. You can choose to correct and approve or reject biometric enrollment transaction profiles using this application.

This manual is up to date for GBS MIR version 1.5.1.

Access and Authentication

You must access the MIR with a web browser, and Google Chrome is recommended. The access URL is specific to each deployment.

If necessary, contact Griaule support to obtain the correct URL for your environment.

Authentication is required to access the application. The credentials required for the MIR are username and password.

At the bottom of the screen, an option to change the language is presented. This option is also available in settings after login.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

When two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled, the first time you log in, after entering your username and password, a QR Code will be shown that must be registered in Google Authenticator.

circle-info

Google Authenticator is an authentication code generator available as a smartphone app Androidarrow-up-right and iOSarrow-up-right.

Google Authenticator QR Code for two-factor authentication

After successfully registering the QR Code in Google Authenticator, enter the six-digit code generated and click Submit.

You will only need to register the QR Code once. However, on each subsequent login, you will need to enter the six-digit code generated by Google Authenticator.

Two-Factor Authentication

There is a limited number of unsuccessful login attempts that a user can make. Whenever an incorrect code is entered, an error message will be displayed:

Two-Factor Authentication - incorrect code

If you reach the maximum number of unsuccessful login attempts, your account will be automatically locked.

Simultaneous Logins and Browser Registration

Only one session per user is allowed. It is not possible to log in simultaneously with the same profile more than once in the application. If a user is already connected and another access occurs using the same username and password, the user with the older session will be notified and disconnected on the next action.

Additionally, only one browser can be used at a time. When attempting to log in using a different browser, the user will be informed that it is necessary to authenticate the new browser. Authenticating a new browser will revoke access from the previous browser.

To authenticate a new browser, click Authenticate and then enter the verification code that will be sent to the email associated with the user's account.

If authentication is successful, a notification will appear in the upper right corner of the screen after login.

Change or Reset Password

For security reasons, you can change your password or reset it if you forget it.

Change Password

To change your password, after logging in, hover over your username in the top right corner of the screen and click Change password.

Then enter the current password and the new password twice. Make sure to meet the password requirements; they are listed below the new password field and will turn green when met. Finally, to confirm the change, click Change password.

Reset Password

To reset your password, on the login screen, click Forgot your password?:

Then enter the profile username and click Submit.

An email containing a verification code will be sent to the email address associated with that profile. Enter the verification code and click Submit code.

If the code is correct, you will be able to create a new password. Enter the new password twice. Make sure to meet the password requirements, they are listed below the new password field and will turn green when met. Finally, to confirm the reset, click Reset password.

User Interface

When logging in, the list of pending profiles is displayed.

main interface

The MIR shows the oldest profiles first. You can scroll down to access more recent profiles or use the filters in the top menu to retrieve specific profiles. When scrolling down, a small blue arrow pointing up will appear in the bottom right corner of the page. Clicking it will bring the user back to the top of the list.

To access a profile, click on it.

Filtering Profiles

When searching for specific profiles, the user can add filters to the transactions.

The filter area is placed in the top menu, as can be seen in the image. The filtering options are:

  • Date - Restricts the list to a time range. There are shortcuts for one day (today), last week and last month.

  • Transaction status - Restricts the list to approved, pending or rejected profiles.

    • Profiles Approved are identified by a green dot.

    • Profiles Rejected are identified by a red dot.

    • Profiles Pending are identified by an orange dot.

  • By key - Restricts the list by the provided string.

  • By biographic - Restricts the list by the provided string.

After confirming the filter conditions, they will be displayed on the right side. To clear filtering options, click Clear filters.

Resolving Pending Profiles

A pending profile is a profile whose GBDS detected problems with its enrollment, requiring manual review to be validated. To access a profile, click on it on the MIR main screen.

When accessing a profile, a page with the person's information will be displayed.

main interface

At the top of this screen, you can see the face biometrics, the biographic values, the keys, the labels, the problems found and the actions performed.

Below, you will find the selection of the biometric tab for fingerprint, palm and iris. Problematic biometrics will be highlighted in red by default.

Problems

If an enrollment is in Quality Analysis, it means there are some issues. Knowing these issues can help you correct the enrollment.

All detected problems can be seen in the panel Problems found, where you can mark them as resolved or not. It is possible to check/uncheck everything at once with the button Mark all problems as resolved, shown on the right side of the Problems found panel.

To help identify the origin of a problem, the MIR displays colored borders around fingerprints and the face, indicating the presence of problems related to that image. The possible problems that the MIR can report are:

  • Low quality templates (face and fingerprint)

  • Duplicate fingerprints

  • Sequence control issues:

    • Finger does not match the sequence control fingerprint

    • Finger matched another fingerprint from the sequence control.

The following section will describe the MIR tools to resolve these issues.

Resolving Problems

The MIR offers some tools to help you resolve the issues. They are:

Except for Swap Biometrics, you can access all tools by hovering over a given biometric. In addition, a tool is provided to Swap the Sides of Biometrics.

circle-info

Low quality face templates cannot be handled and are only indications to help the user decide to approve or reject the profile.

Compare and Swap Biometrics

You can compare and swap the biometric by dragging one biometric over another. Doing so will open the page Biometric comparison. The Swap biometrics button will be displayed in the bottom menu if you are comparing a primary biometric with another primary biometric.

Swap the Sides of Biometrics

The MIR provides a tool to invert the sides of all biometrics. To access this tool, hover over the arrow indicator next to the text "Primary" or "Sequence control" on the profile page and click the button that appears, as indicated in the image.

It will invert the sides of the biometrics. This means that the biometric of one hand will become the biometric of the other and vice versa.

Edit Biometrics

You can edit a fingerprint to try to improve its quality. To do this, hover over the fingerprint image and click the pencil icon. It will open the page Biometric editing. This page contains the biometric fragment editing tools explained in the Editing Fragments, of BEST.

When displaying the minutiae, the colors indicate:

  • 1 Dark Blue: Minutiae created manually

  • 2 Light Blue: High quality minutiae (automatically extracted)

  • 3 Yellow: Medium quality minutiae (automatically extracted)

  • 4 Red: Low quality minutiae (automatically extracted)

After editing, click the Save button to save the modifications. Click the X button or press ESC to cancel the edits. Attempting to cancel the edits will display a confirmation box.

Crop from Sequence Control

The sequence control crop tool allows selecting an area of the sequence control to replace the problematic finger. When clicking to open this tool, the crop screen will appear. Select one of the crop tools (rectangular or polygonal) and extract the image by clicking Crop region.

Import from Sequence Control

Importing a fingerprint from the sequence control will automatically extract it and paste it into the primary finger. To do this, click the icon and confirm the operation in the dialog box that will open.

circle-exclamation

Remove Biometric

To remove a biometric, click the Trash icon. It will clear the biometric box area and a message will appear indicating that the box has no biometric.

Restore to Original

The restore option reverts the modification on a biometric to the profile's original biometric. This option appears on the opposite side of the other editing tools after any change to that biometric. When clicked, a confirmation box will appear to revert the biometric to its original state.

Approve or Reject a Profile

To approve a profile, all problems MUST be marked as resolved. However, there are no restrictions to reject a profile. To perform one of the actions, click the corresponding button at the bottom center of the screen.

Any of the buttons will trigger a confirmation box where the user can comment on the selected operation.

Actions Taken

The actions taken area shows the actions that you (or other examiners) performed on a profile. It shows the last action taken and lists all confirmed actions that caused any change to the profile.
